Trade projection for Zach Ertz after Eagles deal Carson Wentz to Colts - NJ.com

The Eagles agreed to trade former franchise quarterback Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday, but that probably won’t be the last major move GM Howie Roseman and the front office make this offseason.

Tight end Zach Ertz is squarely on the trade block following the worst season of his career. With the Eagles facing a heavy cap debt and Ertz craving a contract extension, it makes sense for both sides to part ways.

Trading Ertz would save the Eagles roughly $4.7 million in cap space. While that’s just a dent in their projected $43.7 million cap hole, the Eagles need all the help they can get to lower their cap number.

Just like with Wentz, Ertz’s departure is a necessary move for a team that is headed toward a rebuild.

With an Ertz trade likely on the way, the Eagles are probably going to look for a mid-round pick in return. Here’s a projected deal that makes sense for all involved:

Proposed deal: The Eagles send TE Zach Ertz to the Green Bay Packers for a 2021 fourth-round pick.

Why it makes sense for the Eagles: The Eagles need to lower their cap number and acquire more draft picks. The Eagles don’t have a fourth-round pick, and Ertz is coming off an awful season. While some fans would want more from the franchise’s top receiver over the past five years, the Eagles have little leverage in a deal. Taking a fourth-round pick and doing right by the longtime contributor makes sense for them.

Why it makes sense for the Packers: Aaron Rodgers needs more weapons on offense. While Robert Tonyan played very well this past season, he could be upgraded by the arrival of Ertz, who is a bulk playmaker. Rodgers and Ertz could team with Aaron Jones and Davante Adams to become a dangerous offensive quartet. Ertz is essentially only on a one-year deal, so parting with anything more than a Day 3 pick wouldn’t make a lot of sense.

Why it makes sense for Ertz: The tight end needs to have a bounce-back campaign, and Rodgers can certainly help him achieve that goal. Being sent to a perennial contender would be ideal for Ertz, who is on the wrong side of 30 and is no longer a go-to playmaker like he was a few years ago. He can now be a cog in the machine as opposed to the main threat on offense. That outlook should help Ertz recover from a forgettable final season in Philly.

Conclusion: The Eagles aren’t going to get a heavy return for Ertz. Coming off a poor season, with just one year left on his deal, the 30-year-old tight end needs to go to somewhere he can excel as part of a group. The Packers would benefit from his reliability and Ertz would be able to bounce back in an explosive offense. The Eagles could then continue their rebuild by adding another asset to their draft haul.
