"People, I think, are just under the assumption of belief that it's a foregone conclusion that [the San Francisco 49ers are] going to take Mac Jones with that third pick in the draft," Pauline told Trey Wingo on a recent podcast (h/t to Patrick Tulini). "I'm told that's not the case at all. There are some things that they're looking at with Mac Jones that they're going to look into a little bit deeper that may concern them. I'm told, right now, it's about 50-50 Mac Jones or one of the two other quarterbacks."
Those two other quarterback options are Justin Fields of Ohio State and Trey Lance of North Dakota State. While many see Jones as having a higher floor and being more pro-ready right out of the gate, the other two are seen as having higher ceilings and being more worthy of a top-three pick.
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch were in attendance for Jones' pro day last week, passing on attending Fields' workout on the same day. Although, assistant general manager Adam Peters and other team representatives were present to watch the former Buckeye.
Shanahan and Lynch will have a chance to see Fields in person next week.
"Listen, Justin Fields announced today he's going to have a second pro day," Pauline continued. "He's going to throw again on April [14] at Ohio State. That is a stroke of genius by Justin Fields and his people because, as we all know, when Alabama had the second pro day, the San Francisco hierarchy went to [Jones'] pro day at Alabama and missed the Justin Fields pro day. Fields is now going to have another shot to throw for the San Francisco 49ers.
"So, the bottom line is this: People are automatically penning in Mac Jones to the San Francisco 49ers at three. I'm told that's very premature, at this point in time."
Pauline added: "What I'm hearing [is], yeah, the Niners may like one of the quarterbacks more than the other, but they're comfortable with many of the three guys because they like the skills of all three quarterbacks. ... I'm just hearing, at this point in time, it's not a given that Mac Jones is going to be selected by the Niners with the third selection."You can listen to the entire draft discussion below. The portion about the 49ers' selection begins at about the 18:40 mark.
"People are under the assumption that the #49ers are going to take Mac Jones with the No. 3 pick. I'm told that it's about 50-50 either Mac Jones or one of the other two QBs." -- @TonyPauline dropping some inside information on PFN Draft Insiders ⬇️⬇️https://t.co/4ATserLhPV

Analyst calls the idea that the 49ers traded up for Mac Jones 'a punch to the stomach'
By David Bonilla

Longtime draft analyst Matt Miller is convinced that the San Francisco 49ers traded up to the No. 3 overall pick for Alabama quarterback Mac Jones, and he doesn't sound too happy about it. He grew up as a Niners fan, and the idea that his favorite NFL team might select Jones over a prospect like Justin Fields of Ohio State disturbs him on two fronts—as a fan and an analyst. "As a lifelong Niners fan, that's such a punch to the stomach," Miller said on the Dan Patrick Show. "I'm trying to trust (general manager) John Lynch and (head coach) Kyle Shanahan, but I remember when they said they didn't need a quarterback and they passed on Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson only to pick up C.J. Beathard in the third round. "I'm still a little gun-shy about

Yet another mock draft has the San Francisco 49ers selecting former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones with the No. 3 overall pick. This one from ESPN's Mike Tannenbaum is a bit different, though. While some analysts feel that Jones-to-49ers is the most likely scenario, many feel that the selection would be a reach, especially with potentially higher-ceiling prospects Justin Fields and Trey Lance likely to still be on the board. The latest ESPN mock draft has Tannenbaum, a former NFL executive, playing the role of general manager for all 32 teams and choosing the players he feels are the best fit for

San Francisco is a potential destination for the Crimson Tide quarterback. Last week, the 49ers traded up from their No. 12 spot to No. 3 overall. "I think in watching them, obviously, throughout the years, Coach Shanahan, and what he does on offense is
Todd McShay has 49ers selecting QB Mac Jones in latest two-round mock draft
By David Bonilla

Everyone is trying to figure out what the San Francisco 49ers will do with the No. 3 overall draft pick. Last week, they moved into that slot via a blockbuster and draft-altering trade with the Miami Dolphins. ESPN analyst Todd McShay released his latest mock draft, this one of the two-round variety, and has quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson going to the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets, respectively, with the first two selections. San Francisco is also expected to select its quarterback of the future and will likely have its choice of Justin Fields, Trey Lance,
