When No. 1 Alabama plays No. 3 Ohio State for the CFP national championship game Monday night, the keys for a successful Crimson Tide night aren’t complicated.
ESPN analysts Greg McElroy, a former Alabama quarterback, and David Pollack laid it out Monday during “College Football Live.”
“They have to protect the football, first and foremost,” McElroy said. “They can’t give away free possessions. They can’t give away the short field. They also need to continue to be who they are offensively. This is a big play-offense that wants to push the ball down the field.
“I know Ohio State is going to play a lot of cover 3. I know they are going to try and keep the ball in front of them, but they have to keep the defense accountable when those big plays are there to be made down the field.”
The Tide is outscoring opponents 48-19 on the season, and is +11 when it comes to fumbles and interceptions on the season.
For Pollack, it is simpler than that.
“On defense, you have to get a few stops,” he said. “That’s it. Not 20, just a few. A few throughout the game. Like tennis, hold serve a couple of times, and you are good to go. Your offense is going to score, so I think getting a few stops and forcing a turnover or two. You get the ball back to your offense, and you can have them press.
“Defense doesn’t have to be dominating.”
Alabama and Ohio State kick off at 7 p.m. (8 p.m. ET) and will be live streamed on fuboTV, which offers a 7-day free trial. ESPN will televise the game.
