Instead of playing for the Nets on Tuesday, Brooklyn star Kyrie Irving took part in a video-call launch party for Manhattan District Attorney Democratic candidate Tahanie Aboushi.
Aboushi tweeted an image of the Zoom meeting, and Irving — who has been away from the Nets since last week due to personal reasons — was among the 200 volunteers and supporters who participated.
The meeting, co-hosted by the actress Cynthia Nixon, began at 7 p.m. — about 40 minutes before the Nets tipped off against the Denver Nuggets at the Barclays Center.
Irving, 28, has missed four straight games, including his team’s 122-116 win Tuesday.
The point guard’s absence is believed to be because he is upset over the US Capitol riot.
Irving has not spoken publicly since the insurrection. On Monday night a video surfaced of Irving maskless at what appeared to be a family birthday party.
The video was not dated. Irving’s father, Drederick, turned 55 on Monday, while his sister, Asia, turned 30 on Tuesday.
Nets general manager Sean Marks said in a statement that the organization was aware of the video and was “reviewing the circumstances with both Kyrie and the NBA in order to determine compliance with health and safety protocols.”
The NBA’s COVID-19 protocols prohibit players from going to bars, lounges or clubs, or social gatherings with more than 15 people.
If Irving misses games due to a COVID-19 violation, he would be subject to a fine of more than $460,000 per game, according to the New York Times.
Irving is in the second season of a four-year, $136 million contract.
