Media chatter painted a curious picture after the 49ers traded up to the No. 3 spot on March 26. Because of the history of quarterbacks that Shanahan has worked with, speculation ran rampant, linking Jones to the 49ers.
The narrative has changed a bit since Justin Fields of Ohio State held his second pro day this week. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch were in attendance, and Fields is now the favorite to succeed Jimmy Garoppolo in Santa Clara.
NFL Media analyst Bucky Brooks joined the Rich Eisen Show today and discussed the 49ers' options with their top pick. With several mock drafts still projecting a Jones-to-Niners scenario on April 29, Eisen asked Brooks who he believes the pick will be.
"Justin Fields or Trey Lance," Brooks responded. "I think the conversation about Mac Jones is just conversation. I think when you're Kyle Shanahan, and you move up, you move up to get a remarkable talent. And that talent, to me, needs to be someone who can not only do the things that you want to do on the script, but off the script.
"Because at the end of the day, what you're doing is you need to compare your quarterback to the other quarterbacks in the division. And if we're being honest, Rich, the NFC West has Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray, and Matthew Stafford. In any scenario, do we view Mac Jones as being the player that can be better than any of those guys in the next two to three years? Because if we don't, then we shouldn't make a move for him.
"But when we think about the extraordinary talents of the two others (Fields and Lance) that are mentioned, we can see how their athleticism and combination of arm talent could give them an opportunity to succeed and surpass some of those guys in the division. I think it has to be one of those two other guys, and I believe Mac Jones is just a smokescreen."
Brooks went on to break down Lance's skill set and NFL potential. You can watch and listen to the entire segment below.

Kiper explains why he'd be 'very surprised' if the 49ers didn't draft Mac Jones

ESPN's Mel Kiper isn't among the segment of national writers who are backing off a bit from the narrative that former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones to the San Francisco 49ers at No. 3 is a near-lock. The analyst had Jones going to the Niners in his latest mock draft and later joined ESPN's Get Up! to discuss the projection. With Trevor Lawrence expected to land with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Zach Wilson with the New York Jets, and Jones anticipated to join San Francisco, Get Up! host Mike Greenberg asked Kiper if he considers the first three selections in this year's draft to be a lock. "I think they are a lock, right now," Kiper responded. "And

Yet another mock draft has the San Francisco 49ers selecting former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones with the No. 3 overall pick. This one from ESPN's Mike Tannenbaum is a bit different, though. While some analysts feel that Jones-to-49ers is the most likely scenario, many feel that the selection would be a reach, especially with potentially higher-ceiling prospects Justin Fields and Trey Lance likely to still be on the board. The latest ESPN mock draft has Tannenbaum, a former NFL executive, playing the role of general manager for all 32 teams and choosing the players he feels are the best fit for
Neither Lynch nor Shanahan asked Nick Saban about Mac Jones, potential 49ers draft pick, at pro day

File this under interesting pre-draft tidbits. San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan were in attendance for Alabama's pro day last week. That made headlines because the duo opted to watch quarterback Mac Jones rather than attend Ohio State's pro day to watch Justin Fields. Paired with Chris Simms' speculation that San Francisco might have traded up to the No. 3 spot for Jones, that spurred others to seriously consider a Jones-to-49ers scenario. Alabama head coach Nick Saban recently joined the Dan Patrick Show and shared that neither Lynch nor Shanahan asked him anything about his former quarterback, who helped guide the Crimson Tide to a national championship. And it wasn't because they didn't have an opportunity to do
