While Nick Foles appears to be open to it, the Colts have no current plans to trade for the Super Bowl winner or fellow veteran quarterbacks Gardner Minshew and Marcus Mariota following Carson Wentz's recent injury, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen. That could change if Wentz experiences complications following Monday's foot surgery, per Mortensen.
The Colts' current plan is to roll with second-year quarterback Jacob Eason, who did not take a snap during the 2020 regular season. Indianapolis also recently signed veteran Brett Hundley to give them added insurance at the position. They have not ruled out having Wentz back under center for their season-opener against the Seattle Seahawks.
Including the playoffs, Foles, Minshew and Mariota have a combined 142 starts. Foles is currently behind Andy Dalton in Chicago and possibly 2020 first-rounder Justin Fields, while Minshew is behind No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence on the Jaguars' depth chart. Mariota, the top pick in the 2015 draft, is Derek Carr's backup in Las Vegas.
Foles was asked on Monday about the possibility of being traded from Chicago to Indianapolis. In 2017, Foles won Super Bowl MVP honors while leading the Eagles to their first Super Bowl championship after Foles went down with a late-season injury. Foles' offensive coordinator during that run was Colts coach Frank Reich, whose familiarity with Wentz contributed to Indianapolis trading for the former Eagles first-rounder this offseason.
"Listen, Frank Reich is one of the favorite -- if not my favorite -- coaches of all time," Foles said. "He understands me as a player, he understands me as a person. I haven't had any talks with them (Colts about a trade). I'm a Chicago Bear right now, but he knows me.
"You all watched the 2017 season and the playoffs where he changed the offense and built it around me. He understood my mentality as a player and he was able to build it around me and put me in a successful position."
Despite his lack of pro experience, Eason has displayed promise during training camp. Offensive coordinator Marcus Brady has lauded Eason's understanding of the playbook as well as his ability to read the defense before the snap. Eason has also displayed his considerable arm strength that helped him throw for more than 3,100 yards and 23 touchdowns during his only season as Washington's starting quarterback.
"He has to prepare like he's starting Week 1," Reich said of Eason, via Zak Keefer of The Athletic. "We don't know if that'll happen or not, but he's gotta be ready. And we're gonna trust him in that process and support him and get behind him.
"The job is Jacob's right now. He's gotta prove it. He knows that. He's in the driver's seat, he's getting reps with the (first-team offense), and I'm believing that this is going to work out the way we want it to work out … we're gonna see what he's made of."
