Field of Dreams game odds, model projection: White Sox favored against Yankees in showcase of baseball... - The Athletic

The Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees will live out a 1980s movie by playing in front of a cornfield in Iowa for the Field of Dreams game on Thursday.

The game, which will take place at 7 p.m. Eastern on Fox, is being played in Dyersville, Iowa. The stadium was built just for this game and holds 8,000 seats, which is much bigger than anything the movie “Field of Dreams” used on Ray Kinsella’s farm. The iconic field used for the movie is adjacent to the stadium.

Some of the dimensions and look of the stadium are built to resemble Old Comiskey Park, the home of the White Sox from 1910-1990. Scott Dochterman has an in-depth look at how the stadium and the game came to be.

The stadium for Thursday’s game is 335 feet down the lines, 380 feet to the alleys and 400 feet to center. It has a 12-foot wall in center and smaller 7-foot walls in the corners.

The broadcast is also going to be somewhat unique with Fox putting a lot of resources into the production. Dozens of cameras and microphones, multiple aerial drones, and stylized graphics to fit the theme will make for an unusual viewing experience. Plus, the game will be available in 4K/HDR. Richard Deitsch has more on Fox’s production of the Field of Dreams game.

Lance Lynn is starting for the White Sox, which will be the home team, against Andrew Heaney for the Yankees. Lynn was a late switch after Carlos Rodon, the originally scheduled starter, went on the injured list on Wednesday. Lynn is the MLB ERA leader. The White Sox have been good against lefties for the past couple seasons and that might be more true now that standout right-handed hitters Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert are back in the lineup after extended injuries.

White Sox manager Tony La Russa will not be with the team. Miguel Cairo will manage the team while La Russa attends the funeral of his sister’s husband.

The White Sox are favored at -165 on the moneyline while the Yankees are +140. The total is 9.5. Derek Carty’s THE BAT X model gives the White Sox a 53% chance to win, which means the model views the Yankees as the value play of the two, with a projected total of 9.38. All of the model’s picks for today’s games are available here.

For more on the game and the odds, Carty answered a couple questions about the matchup.

How do you think the park will play based on the dimensions and other factors?

Carty: Projecting parks with zero data always comes with wide error bars, because there are so many things that can impact how a park plays that we just can never know.  How are the balls stored? How are they mudded? How is the groundskeeping? How will wind interact with the various elements of the park? And on and on and on. But what we do know about Field of Dreams is that the dimensions are more or less league average. We know the height of the fence in centerfield (12 feet) is above average, and the height of the rest of the fences (7 feet) are slightly below-average. We know that Dyersville sits at an elevation of roughly 950 feet, which would be fourth-highest in baseball behind Coors, Chase, and SunTrust. It’s a long way from Coors, but it’s enough above sea-level where we should expect it to play hitter-friendly, all else equal. I should also mention, it’s going to be 88 degrees with 12 mph blowing out to LF tomorrow (at least, in the early forecast), so that will cause it to play even more hitter-friendly.

Does your model account for trade deadline additions? If so, how much did the Yankees and White Sox improve?

Carty: Yes, THE BAT projects everything on the individual player level. It will depend on who is in the lineup on any particular day, but the additions of (Joey) Gallo and (Anthony) Rizzo will absolutely lead to the Yankees projecting better than they otherwise would have.  Chicago added an above-average hitter in Cesar Hernandez and a couple decent bullpen arms, so that will all find its way into the projection.
