Joel Embiid signed his supermax extension. So, what's next for Sixers? - The Athletic

Ever since Adam Silver announced the No. 3 pick of the 2014 NBA Draft, as the satellite delay from Los Angeles made it seem like Joel Embiid did not react to his name being called, Embiid has been inextricably linked to Philadelphia.

Embiid embraced being the face of The Process (even making it his nickname), leading the Sixers from the lottery to a playoff series win in just two seasons. He gave the city and franchise something they had been searching for since Allen Iverson left town the previous decade: a legitimate superstar. And as a bonus, Embiid has accomplished this in his own unique style.

At the start of his career, Embiid went all-out during games, diving into the stands for balls he had no business diving for. Even as he has dialed most of those plays back, Embiid still plays off his home crowd better than perhaps any other player in the NBA. After big plays or dustups with other players, he is always egging on the Philadelphia crowd. It’s probably fair to say he’s currently the most important, beloved athlete in a city that deeply cares about every one of its professional sports teams.

And now Embiid going to be linked to Philly for the foreseeable future after signing a four-year, supermax contract extension with the Sixers worth a projected four years and $196 million. The deal will tack on two years to his previous contract, taking him through the 2026-27 season.

Here are some thoughts on the deal and how it affects the Sixers moving forward.

The calculus for both parties

Embiid’s injury history is the elephant in the room. He missed his first two NBA seasons after requiring two surgeries on his right foot. And he only played 31 games in his first season, tearing his meniscus.
