Over the weekend, Josh Allen became the first quarterback from the first round of the 2018 NFL draft to receive a long-term and lucrative contract extension. The Bills and the QB agreed to a six-year extension.
While Allen is amongst the more successful of that bunch, Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is certainly the most polarizing. That’s what comes with being the No. 1 overall pick in such a deep draft class.
But being that top pick doesn’t guarantee you’ll get the top payday and Mayfield’s wait for his contract extension is rolling on.
While he waits, Mayfield did comment on Allen’s long-term deal after it was announced. He’s glad for his pal.
“Very happy for Josh,” Mayfield said via press conference. “I think Josh is a great guy. We went through that (draft) process together and I’m very happy for him. He’s in a tradition-rich town like Buffalo and they’re lucky to have a quarterback like him.”
Mayfield went on to mention that his mind is not on his own personal extension that is looming. He even said no matter how many times he’s asked about it during the 2021 season, Mayfield said he’s only focusing on his upcoming opponent each week.
“I’m not doing the negotiation so quite frankly, I don’t give a damn. I’m worried about winning Week 1,” Mayfield said.
With such a blunt answer, Mayfield does shine light on something for Buffalo.
The Bills, Allen, and fans don’t need to worry about such questions any longer.
Allen’s locked in and everyone is just fine with that.
