DeVonta Smith can add SEC all-time leading receiver to his résumé as he soon turns his attention to preparing for the NFL draft.
In the final game of his college career, Smith gained 22 yards on a first-quarter catch Monday night, passing former Vanderbilt wide receiver Jordan Matthews as the conference’s all-time leader in career receiving yardage.
Smith entered the national championship game against Ohio State with 3,750 receiving yards -- already the most in school history -- and needing 10 more yards to pass Matthews (3,759 from 2010-13) for the SEC record.
With a 5-yard touchdown catch on the first play of the second quarter, Smith became the SEC’s single-season record holder in receiving touchdowns, passing 20 by LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase in 2019, and Alabama’s all-time leader in career receptions, passing Amari Cooper’s 228.
On a 12-yard catch later in the second quarter, Smith passed Cooper for the most single-season receiving yards in Alabama history. Cooper held the previous record with 1,727 in 2014.
Smith added a 44-yard catch late in the first half, passing Chase’s 1,780 yards last season for the most single-season receiving yards in SEC history. Smith entered Monday night with 1,641 yards on the season.
Smith exited the game in the third quarter after suffering a hand injury. He had 12 catches for 215 yards and three touchdowns before departing.
Last week, Smith became the first wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy in 29 years. He also won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s best wide receiver while being honored as the Associated Press’ player of the year, Walter Camp player of the year and the Maxwell Award winner.
ESPN last week projected Smith to be the No. 3 overall pick in April’s NFL draft.
After deciding to stay at Alabama for a fourth season, Smith has torn apart the Alabama and SEC record books. Here is an updated look at where Smith stands; records that Smith holds are marked with an asterisk:
