Ohio State will be without an important specialist on Monday night when the Buckeyes take the field against Alabama. Starting kicker Blake Haubeil announced via Instagram roughly three hours before the game that he would not be available to face the Crimson Tide due to COVID-19. Haubeil acknowledged that he tested positive for COVID-19 but wrote that he has no symptoms.
Haubeil has converted all 85 of his extra points in his career and is 28 for 35 on field goals, including 5 of 7 this season. Jake Seibert or Dominic DiMaccio will likely step in for Haubeil; Seibert is 13 for 13 on extra points this season and 0 for 1 on field goals, while DiMaccio is 3 for 3 on extra points and 1 for 2 on field goals.
"I unfortunately will not be playing in the game tonight due to COVID-19," Haubeil wrote on Instagram. "I'm extremely upset, but at the same time I'm overwhelmingly thankful to be an individual who is asymptomatic. I have spent the past four months making sacrifices and have not seen family and friends one single time. So, to say I'm pissed off is a complete understatement. I didn't go out and do something I knew I wasn't supposed to be doing and then wake up with a positive test. That is the honest truth.
"I'm generally a private person, however, I feel as though it is important for me to share my feelings and overall frustration on this matter. Football isn't something I just do, it's a part of who I am. Knowing I have so much more to give and not having the opportunity to do so tonight is one of the most gut-wrenching feelings I've ever experienced. With that being said, a game like tonight has never been about me, the kicker for Ohio State. I'm just one person. Ohio State Football was around long before me and will be around long after my time here. It is a special brotherhood that I am blessed to be a part of. Like the rest of Buckeye Nation, I'll be cheering on my brothers tonight. Go Bucks!!"
It's unclear how many field goals there will actually be in a game that's expected to feature plenty of touchdowns. One player who it seems that the Buckeyes will not be without, however, is star quarterback Justin Fields.
"Justin's had a good week of practice," Ohio State coach Ryan Day said, via Patrick Murphy of 247Sports affiliate Bucknuts. "He's done a really good job preparing and I think that's the thing he felt like he did a good job of going into last game was just preparing at a high level and he's continued to do that this week."
