Antonio Conte’s departure at Inter Milan has quickly led to speculation about Romelu Lukaku leaving as well and joining Chelsea, with the Nerazzurri in desperate need of funds even after a £250m loan from Oaktree Capital. Inter apparently need around €100m (£87m) more to stay afloat, while also imposing a 20 per cent wage cut across the squad.
As the Daily Mail’s rundown of the situation points out, the club could make up that shortfall just by selling the 28-year-old Lukaku, who’s still valued around €120m, and according to Corriere dello Sport (via Sempre Inter) is also being monitored by Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.
While Lukaku is the “most likely to leave”, the likes of Lautaro Martinez, Alessandro Bastoni and Achraf Hakimi are being linked with exits as well. With Simone Ingazhi close to being announced as their new manager, Inter would of course prefer to lose as few players as possible.
All-in-all, Chelsea’s chances of bringing Lukaku back are good, should we choose to do so — certainly better than signing Erling Haaland, who’s unlikely to be on the move this summer, or Harry Kane, who’d never make the jump across that divide.
