Cam Newton asks for 'loyalty' as Mac Jones impresses in Patriots preseason - New York Post

Cam Newton is known for speaking his mind on social media. Friday was no different.

The 32-year-old quarterback posted 10 pictures on Instagram with a cryptic caption, the day following the Patriots’ first preseason game.

“I’m far from perfect, but loyalty, I deserve it,” Newton wrote in his signature font.

The former Panthers’ star started Thursday night’s preseason opener at Gillette Stadium. He played for two series before rookie quarterback Mac Jones, 22, took over. Jones played for the second and third quarters, going 13-for-19 with 87 yards, nearly throwing a touchdown pass that was dropped by Kristian Wilkerson.

Newton went 4-for-7 for 49 yards in his limited game action – which included a vicious hit from Chase Young.

After the game, Newton was asked if he wanted to get more playing time.

“That’s not up to me to make the call,” Newton said. “I’ve got full faith in the coaching staff and the people that get paid to do that. And if they say it’s it, it’s it.”

The 2010 Heisman Trophy winner added that he and Jones – who Newton has nicknamed “Mac and Cheese” – are working together as they battle for the starting job.

“He wants to be so perfect, and I see his preparation is always pristine. That’s what I admire about him, being at such a young age he knows how to prepare,” Newton said of Jones. “He’s just going to keep getting better, and we’re going to be here for each other along this whole process, and that’s what we’re here for.”
