Lionel Messi’s departure from Barcelona had the president of Venezuela in tears.
On Sunday, Messi struggled to contain his own emotions during his farewell press conference at Camp Nou. An ocean away, Nicolás Maduro shared Messi’s sentiment.
“What they did to Messi was ugly,” Maduro said in a press conference celebrating Venezuela’s Olympic athletes. “I cried alongside him. When I saw him crying, I cried because he’s an authentic guy, a triumph of the sporting world. And what they did, the directors of the club Barcelona to the biggest triumph that the Barcelona club has had, there’s no name for it. They gave Messi a kick.”
The Argentinian soccer legend, 34, agreed to terms on a two-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday. Messi maintained that he “did everything” to remain with Barcelona for a 21st season, including agreeing to a 50 percent wage cut on a potential new contract.
However, Barcelona insisted that “financial and structural obstacles” precluded the club from striking a deal with the six-time Ballon d’Or winner.
“The only thing he wanted was to end his career in the Barcelona club,” Maduro said. “… If they are capable of doing that to Messi, who is the greatest glory of the fútbol world, then they are capable of doing it with any other person. They use it, they become billionaires, they campaign for years and then they kick it. What a sad thing.”
On Tuesday, Messi arrived in Paris sporting a “This Is Paris” T-shirt. PSG will formally introduce their new superstar in a press conference Wednesday.
“All our love and solidarity is with Messi’s tears,” Maduro said. “I’m sure that Messi will rise up and will be the champion of champions in the new PSG team.”
