NFL Network's Steve Wyche spoke with general manager John Lynch at BYU's pro day today to get some insight into San Francisco's plans now that they are situated to select one of the top quarterback prospects in next month's draft.
Coincidentally, Lynch got a good look at former BYU quarterback Zack Wilson today. However, he is expected to be selected No. 2 overall by the New York Jets—unless the 49ers know something we don't. Jets head coach Robert Saleh, after all, is San Francisco's former defensive coordinator.

"Speaking with 49ers general manager John Lynch, he didn't come right out and say that they moved to No. 3 to draft a quarterback, but he didn't have to," Wyche said on NFL Network's Total Access. "The first thing he said to me was, 'Once we made the trade, we immediately called our starting quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, to let him know exactly what was going on.'
"Now, as of now, Lynch said that Garoppolo is very much in the team plans and that the rookie quarterback that they draft could learn under Garoppolo.
"But then I said to him, 'Look, though, as we get closer to the draft, and if a team calls, would you entertain that?' He said, 'Absolutely.' And he added that a lot of teams have already been circling, which is why they made this move—to get their quarterback for the future. Whether that future is 2021 or beyond remains to be seen."
One of the teams that may be interested in Garoppolo is New England. The Patriots reportedly inquired about the Niner quarterback's availability before re-signing Cam Newton earlier this month. Most feel that the Patriots remain interested in Garoppolo even after the signing. At the time, the 49ers told the Patriots they had no intent to trade Garoppolo. Obviously, circumstances have changed.

Last month, general manager John Lynch sounded confident that Jimmy Garoppolo would be his starting quarterback in September. The New England Patriots reportedly inquired about Garoppolo before signing Cam Newton this past week and were told by the San Francisco 49ers that their quarterback was not available right now. Garoppolo is the 49ers' starting quarterback, and that will only change if a better option presents itself, as is the case with any position on the roster. Andrew Siciliano recently asked Jim Trotter on NFL Network if Jimmy

Evan Lazar of CLNS Media Network made Bay Area headlines earlier this month when he reported that the New England Patriots had inquired about San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo before re-signing Cam Newton. They were shut down. It was long assumed that Bill Belichick sought a reunion with his former heir apparent to Tom Brady, and the report confirmed that. Greg Bedard of the Boston Sports Journal had previously reported that the Patriots coveted Garoppolo as "Plan A" at quarterback, hoping to reacquire him this

The New England Patriots reportedly inquired about Jimmy Garoppolo before the start of free agency. The San Francisco 49ers told them that the quarterback was not available at that time. That doesn't mean that Bill Belichick has given up on the idea of a reunion with Garoppolo, his one-time heir apparent to Tom Brady. The Patriots re-signed Cam Newton after being shut down by the 49ers. Looking to rebound from a seven-win 2020 campaign, they went on a spending spree in free agency. However, many don't feel that Newton will be New England's featured piece on offense. "No, that is not the sense that I am getting around league circles, that Cam

In case you missed the news, the San Francisco 49ers pulled off a blockbuster trade on Friday, moving up from No. 12 overall in next month's draft to No. 3. That puts the team in a good spot to select one of the top quarterback prospects, which is what San Francisco is expected to do. Where does that leave quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo? ESPN's Adam Schefter, who first reported the trade news, was told by a 49ers source that the team has no intention of trading Garoppolo and plans to keep him — at least for 2021. "Jimmy is here to stay. He's our guy this year," the source told Schefter. 49ers now
