The last NCAA Tournament game called by Brian Anderson was a professional nightmare. On March 30, 2019, Anderson and partner Chris Webber called the game of the tournament at that point — Virginia’s 80-75 overtime win over Purdue in an Elite Eight classic in Louisville. In the game’s signature moment — Virginia forward-center Mamadi Diakite sinking a desperation jumper as the horn sounded to send the game into overtime tied at 70 — Anderson incorrectly told viewers that Diakite was shooting for the win.

“In the context of my trade, it’s a non-negotiable,” Anderson told me after the game in an email. “I can’t make that mistake. There is no excuse. I did not serve the viewers well on that play. It’s embarrassing. I deserve the criticism. The lesson: I have to stay in the moment.
