Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers are unlikely to have moved up to the number three overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to select Trey Lance or Justin Fields if past behavior predicts future behavior, as social psychology research suggests.
Shanahans have been wary of mobile quarterbacks
Kyle Shanahan was the offensive coordinator when the Washington Redskins drafted Robert Griffin III with the second overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft and Kirk Cousins early in the fourth round of the same draft, leaving many scratching their head as to why the team would select a quarterback so soon after drafting what many believed to be the franchise quarterback in RGIII.
Later it became known that Mike Shanahan resented and was ready to quit over Dan Snyder's preferential treatment of RGIII and tepid support of Kirk Cousins, and Mike Shanahan explicitly expressed anxiety about potential injury to running quarterback RGIII while calling Kirk Cousins a steal that he could not pass up. In his senior season, RGIII rushed for 699 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns.
Kyle Shanahan was the head coach when the San Francisco 49ers passed on Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson to select Solomon Thomas and to later select a quarterback in the third round. In his junior season at Texas Tech, Mahomes had 285 yards rushing and 12 rushing touchdowns; Deshaun Watson had 629 yards rushing and 9 rushing touchdowns in his final season at Clemson.
Shanahans have sought quarterbacks who don't run
Kirk Cousins rushed for -39 yards and zero touchdowns his senior season and C.J. Beathard rushed for -13 yards and two touchdowns his senior season. The year before he was traded to the 49ers, Jimmy Garoppolo had 6 yards rushing and zero touchdowns and history has shown Kyle Shanahan to choose quarterbacks with non-existent running games.
Justin Fields and Trey Lance have running games
Justin Fields rushed for 484 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns his sophomore season and 383 yards and 5 rushing touchdowns in 6 fewer games his junior season. Trey Lance rushed for 1100 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns his sophomore season.
Will history repeat itself?
It is a foregone conclusion that San Francisco has moved up to three to take a quarterback and if this turns out to be the case will Kyle Shanahan once again go for a quarterback who does not feature a running game and is a more traditional pocket passer in the mold of Kirk Cousins or C.J. Beathard?
Niners moving to 3 = QB
— Michael Silver (@MikeSilver) March 26, 2021
Some, including Shanahan's friend Chris Simms, have mentioned Mac Jones as a possibility for the Niners. Mac Jones had 14 yards rushing a one rushing touchdown his junior season.
49ers-Dolphins...Kyle Shanahan trying to control his own fate. You trade up to 3 for a QB who is NFL-ready right now, not a project. And to me that says Mac Jones.
— Chris Simms (@CSimmsQB) March 26, 2021
I'd echo @CSimmsQB and @MikeSilver that Mac Jones, like Trey Lance, is a fit for Kyle Shanahan's offense. The question with Jones regards upside/value in moving up.

History doesn't have to repeat itself
They say that doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity and humans are allowed to change their minds, but does Shanahan have the flexibility and vigor to break the mold and pivot toward choosing a mobile quarterback for the first time? Some think so.
Mac Jones would not be a shock. My thought, though, is they'd want more playmaking ability from the legs of their next QB. https://t.co/7l4XvCmF4B

Niners fans who are thirsty for a dynamic playmaker at quarterback are praying that history will not repeat itself and that the idea the Shanahan won't take Trey Lance or Justin Fields is a freezing cold take, one that will not age well.
Because if the San Francisco 49ers add a mobile quarterback with the arm of Trey Lance or Justin Fields, the rest of the NFL could be in trouble.

49ers select QB Trey Lance in Chad Reuter's latest mock draft
By David Bonilla

Today's trades have left analysts scrambling to update their mock drafts. The San Francisco 49ers are suddenly in a position to select one of the top quarterback prospects. Trevor Lawrence will almost certainly go No. 1 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The New York Jets are expected to select Zach Wilson with the No. 2 overall pick. NFL Media analyst Chad Reuter released an updated mock draft and has Lawrence and Wilson gone by the 49ers' spot at No. 3. Still, it leaves San Francisco with several options, and Reuter has the team going with former North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance. "The 49ers pulled off a major trade with the

Everyone is discussing Friday's massive trade between the San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins, moving the former from the No. 12 overall pick to No. 3 while surrendering future first-rounders. That puts the team in a prime spot to select one of the top quarterback prospects in next month's draft. It won't be Trevor Lawrence of Clemson, who is expected to be selected No. 1 overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Zach Wilson of BYU could be headed to the New York Jets at No. 2. Assuming that's how things play out, NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah had some thoughts on what general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan might do at No. 3. "That's what we expect, and that's

With the initial flurry of free agency dying down, Michael Renner of Pro Football Focus released the analytics site's latest mock draft and has the San Francisco 49ers selecting their quarterback of the future while freeing up some salary-cap space in the process. Renner has general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan moving up to the No. 4 spot in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons to grab quarterback Justin Fields of Ohio State. "The 49ers give up a future first and some change to get their guy," wrote Renner. "The pick not only represents a possible upgrade over Jimmy Garoppolo, but it also
Lance Zierlein has 49ers selecting Virginia Tech CB Caleb Farley in latest mock draft

Note: Lance Zierlein updated his mock draft after this article was initially published. He now includes the 49ers trading down from No. 12 to No. 14. The article has been updated, but also includes Zierlein's original explanation for the selection at No. 12. NFL Media draft analyst Lance Zierlein had the San Francisco 49ers selecting quarterback Trey Lance out of North Dakota State in his first mock draft, which was released last month. Lance's stock since then has increased. Zierlein now has the former Bison as the third quarterback selected in
