INDIANAPOLIS — Ohio State's men's basketball team is headed back to the Big Ten Tournament championship game. The Buckeyes clinched a spot in the title game on Saturday with a 68-67 nail-biting win against rivals Michigan. The Scarlet and Gray will not meet Illinois on Sunday for all the conference marbles.
In typical Ohio State fashion, the Buckeyes built a big lead in the second half and had to hang on late to get the win. The Scarlet and Gray led by as many as 13 points with just over four minutes to play but some turnovers and an inability to continue to score consistently allowed the Wolverines to nearly crawl all the way back. Guard Mike Smith missed a shot at the buzzer that would have won the game for the Maize and Blue.
After the game, a jubilant Chris Holtmann spoke with the media. The Ohio State head coach gave credit to Michigan for their performance and being able to make this a game late.
"Listen, this was a really good team we played," Holtmann said. "I’ve got a lot of respect for those guys and that team and Juwan (Howard) and the job. Obviously, those guys are used to winning for a number of years, between John and now what’s Juwan’s doing. Really good players, a really good team. One of the elite defensive teams in the country based on numbers right now. I thought their length and size bothered us. Doggone it do we make it interesting. But I give our guys a lot of credit, I give them a lot of credit. I think they battled. I told our sophomore who's had an unbelievable season, it was probably not his best three and a half minutes but it was one of his best defensive possessions there late on the switch out challenge Mike Smith’s shot. So credit to him for responding."
