Auburn is fully embracing the theme in Happy Valley.
With No. 10 Penn State hosting No. 22 Auburn for its annual White Out game at Beaver Stadium, the Tigers on Saturday revealed their uniform combination for the big game -- and unveiled an alternate helmet that suits the night’s theme. Auburn will wear its usual all-white jerseys for the road matchup in State College, Penn., with one slight tweak: The team’s helmets will have white facemasks.
It’s the first time ever that the Tigers will don white facemasks, according to a tweet from Auburn assistant athletics director of marketing, Daniel Heck. Auburn’s helmets typically feature navy facemasks, but the team opted to switch things up for its marquee nonconference game against Penn State in what will be the first-ever regular-season meeting between the two programs and the first road game in a Big Ten stadium for Auburn in 90 years.
The last time Auburn wore an alternate helmet was also against a Big Ten opponent. For the Outback Bowl at the end of the 2019 season, Auburn unveiled an alternate helmet to honor Pat Sullivan, the former Heisman winner who passed away Dec. 1, 2019. That helmet featured a gray facemask, with the AU shield logo on one side of the helmet and Sullivan’s No. 7 on the other.
The team’s official Twitter account on Saturday morning referred to the day’s uniform combination as “light mode” as the Tigers head into Beaver Stadium, where a crowd of more than 106,000 -- nearly all of them clad in all-white -- await them.
Auburn (2-0) and Penn State (2-0) will kick off at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.
